Are Your Cosmetics Safe To Use?
The big brand name cosmetics that you might use right now have suspect or downright dangerous ingredients in them. Can you find safe cosmetics to use?
The FDA does not adequately regulate cosmetics, and in particular does not have any brief to satisfy itself that the ingredients used in cosmetics by the cosmetics manufacturers are safe for human use and human consumption.
Human consumption? Isn’t that a little silly, we don’t eat our cosmetics.
Well really in effect we do. You see if you apply a product to your face, lets say it’s a moisturizer or a lipstick or any form of skin care product or cosmetic product, a little soaks in. And when it soaks in some of it gets into your bloodstream, which is exactly what happens when you eat something. So you have really eaten it.
Some of those ingredients have gone into your system.
And sadly there are some very nasty ingredients in our body care products, cosmetics, skin care and anti aging products and other beauty products. Our lipsticks, mascaras, blushes, foundations, eye shadows and more have ingredients in them that have been shown to cause cancer.
Here’s what the FDA says about their obligations:
The regulatory requirements governing the sale of cosmetics are not as stringent as those that apply to other FDA-regulated products Manufacturers may use any ingredient or raw material, except for color additives and a few prohibited substances, to market a product without a government review or approval.
Do you find that a little scary?
The problem is so bad that there are now entire organizations set up to try and stop the spread of dangerous ingredients in our cosmetics. One of them, possibly the best known, is the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics.
If you get to their website you’ll find they say this.
1. A study of big brand name lipsticks has found that a majority of them had lead in them.
Christian Dior Addict Cover Girl Incredifull Lipcolor Maximum Red True Red and Positive Red LOreal Colour Riche were included. And the tainted lipsticks included some expensive brands too, so it doesn’t help to pay more.
2. Some cosmetics are contaminated with 1,4-Dioxane, and it isnt of course listed on the labels, so there is no way of telling which ones.
And theres lots more examples, no need to list them all here, although I’ve talked about this in more depth in relation to dangerous ingredients in skincare products on my website. So can you find safe cosmetics?
Yes you can, just like you can find safe skin care products.
There are in fact a range of niche cosmetics and skin care companies that produce ranges of high quality safe cosmetics and anti aging skin care products as well, which work very well, better than the (unsafe) big brands actually. And the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics has made it easier by offering a pledge that any company can sign to evidence it’s commitment to making safe products. And the big brands haven’t signed it.
They can’t compete with the big brands on TV advertising, so chances are you’ve never heard of them, but their products are top shelf, though you won’t actually find them on any of the shelves of the stores.
