Why do we pick the fragrances we do?
Each of the many fragrances out there today have their own unique scent. Some are very rich and bold while others are subtle or fruity.
What is it that persuades a consumer to choose a certain fragrance over another? Each scent will appeal to a person in its own way and with designers ranging from Chanel to Dora the Explorer to Brittany Spears, how do you choose?
With the massive selection of scents on the market most scent choices are narrowed down by the cost. The price range for fragrances vary as much as the fragrances themselves.
Many upper class consumers purchase the higher-end line of fragrances buy designers such as Chanel, Versace, or the very extreme called Imperial majesty which runs around $215,000 per bottle. Where as the average American may spend $15 to 40$ per bottle for designers such as Nautica or Ralph Lauren.
Now that the selection has been narrowed down by cost, what is the next factor? The smell itself and how it arouses an inviduals senses is the next factor. Although this may seem simple it is very complex and we still do not know why one scent smells good to one person and terrible to another.
It is interesting to look at the trends behind who buys what type of scent. Age and cultural factors for example are two easily distinguishable classes that tend to have a comparable preferance with in the group. So even though there is no exact science behind it there are trends that suggest broad patterns.
My conclusion to all I have researched besides the cost is this; we prefer what we prefer.
The bottom line is that there is a huge variety of all types for all price ranges. All you have to do is to try a few until you find one that fits your taste and arouses your senses.
