How to Win with your Eclectus Parrot
Generally speaking, there are two stages that an Eclectus Parrot goes through when it is growing up, and I would like to look at and comment on those two stages in this article.
The first stage to comment on is when your parrot is somewhere between approx. 3 – 6 months old. During this time they like to see just how much they can get away with, and it is during this time that they have got to learn that you are the boss.
You must not let him get away with anything as this will make him think that he is the boss in the relationship. I don’t mean that you must punish him, just be quite firm so that he knows that you are the boss. Some experts have suggested that letting your parrot sit on your shoulder during this time is not a good idea, because physically they will be higher than you, and this may lead them to think that they are the dominant one.
Puberty ” When your Eclectus parrot is about nine months old, he will start going through what is essentially puberty. Just as human teenagers have raging emotions, these birds also have raging emotions, and they look for a way to deal with them. This stage, unfortunately, can last until the bird is about two or three years old.
It can be a difficult time for you the owner, as they do have such mood swings, but just like any teenager, they do grow out of it in time, so you just have to ride the storm for a while.
And the best answer really is a good old fashioned dose of patience. Just be patient with your bird and in time he will grow out of these problems and then you will have the Eclectus you have always wanted.
