The Significance of Giving

Living Is Giving is a phrase that I think everyone should live their lives by. Spiritual leaders, wise men, world leaders and top success coaches all over the world have supported and agreed with this statement. However, from looking at the world today, it is apparent that the majority of people in the world do not yet fully understand the true meaning behind that phrase.

The people who give and contribute regularly will understand what it truly means to give. Like everything else, nothing gives you a better understanding than the actual experience. People who do not have the habit of giving will only have a very shallow understanding of it, and misunderstand about the act of giving.

The general way our world perceives giving is the main root cause of this problem. Giving is also associated only with qualities such as being sympathetic, helpful, being the good guy (or gal) and doing our part.

People view giving as an act to collect more points to go to heaven, to accumulate good karma, as to do good deeds so that they will be rewarded in the future. While all this may be true to a certain extent, it is definitely the wrong way to view giving as it that is just a very narrow perspective of it.

This narrow perspective of giving actually encourages the (false) assumption that by giving, the giver gains nothing and only loses out. Too much attention is paid on what is being given out. The focus isn’t on what the giver might get through the act of giving at all. Rather the belief is that the giver will only lose out.

This is not true. In fact, we gain something back in return immediately when we give. The happiness, feelings of significance, purpose, and feel good factor of giving is worth more than what we gave out. All these have positive physical, emotional and spiritual effects on our being.

Apart from that, an often forgotten significance of giving is that it puts you in a state of abundance. How is this possible? Look at it this way, a person can only give something out to someone else when she actually has that thing. If she has nothing, theres no way she can give it out. It is a logical statement. When you are able to give, it only means that you already have.

The more you give, the more youre unconsciously telling yourself that you have abundance. The longer and more regularly this happens, the stronger your belief of self abundance gets ingrained into your psyche. Once that happens, you will naturally start to attract more and more abundance into your life.
